Medical Science (Applied Diploma)

Subject content

The course covers the key topic areas of health, physiology and disease, as well as providing the opportunity to study the areas of pharmacology, physiological measurement, clinical testing and medical research.

You will complete the following units: human health and disease; physiological measurement techniques; medical science research methods; medicines and treatment of disease; clinical laboratory techniques and a medical case study.

Specific entry requirements

Grade 4 or above in either GCSE Combined Science or GCSE Biology and a Grade 4 or above in GCSE Maths.

Learning methods

The course will be delivered through a variety of teaching and learning methods which will include group work, practical activities, research tasks and independent learning. You will need to be able to work well independently and meet coursework deadlines.

Assessment

You will be assessed using a combination of internal and external assessments.

These units will be internally assessed:

• Physiological measurement techniques
• Medical Science research methods
• Medicines and treatment of disease

These units will be externally assessed:

• Human health and disease (via written examinations)
• Clinical laboratory techniques (via an externally set and marked task based assessment)
• Medical case study (via written examinations)

Progression opportunities

This course will equip you with scientific knowledge and understanding and the practical skills to support progression to a range of job roles within healthcare.

When supported by other appropriate qualifications, the course will enable progression to a range of Applied Science Higher Education programmes such as biomedical science, life sciences and physiology.

Please note: This course does not allow progression into medicine, dentistry, pharmacy or veterinary science.
